ALT-C 2010: Jorum Learning & Teaching Competition

The Jorum Learning & Teaching Competition will again run in conjunction with this year's ALT-C conference in Nottingham, 7-9 September. The panel of judges will be looking for exciting, innovative learning and teaching resources that have been created under a Creative Commons licence to showcase at the conference. Overall winners will be presented with their prizes at the ALT-C 2010 Conference Dinner on Wednesday 8th September. The competition is hosted by Jorum and sponsored by Intrallect.

JUDGING CRITERIA

The criteria against which resources will be judged are:

Appropriateness: What is the teaching/learning problem that your resource has been designed to solve and how does it achieve its objectives?

Engagement/Innovation: What makes your resource something that other teachers/students want to use? Does it offer something that other media can't?

Effectiveness: Is your resource an effective way for teachers/students to learn? Each submission should demonstrate how it could be embedded in teaching and learning, and how it could add value to any teaching environment.

Reusability and portability: Digital learning objects are particularly valuable when they are reusable and reconfigurable. Many different aspects may be reusable including, structure, content or pedagogical approach. In addition, how is the object described (metadata) and how is it put together (packaged)?

Note that the criteria are all about education and not about technology. Sometimes the most appropriate, engaging and effective learning and teaching resources are technologically simple.

However, sometimes technology allows approaches to teaching and learning that were previously unimagined.

PRIZES

There are three cash prizes and three commended awards available. Each winner will also receive a certificate.

1st prize: Ł300
2nd prize: Ł200
3rd prize: Ł100

Commended: Ł20 Amazon voucher

The top three prizes will be awarded at the ALT-C 2010 Conference Dinner on 8th September. The three commended awards will receive their prizes at the Jorum session at the conference.

James Clay has been ILT & Learning Resources Manager at Gloucestershire College since November 2006. He is responsible for the VLE, the use of learning technologies, e-learning, mobile learning, the libraries, digital and online resources and the strategic direction of the college in relation to the use of learning technologies. Sarah Darley, Learning Technologist on the NHS Management Training Scheme Programme and part of the Manchester Business School e-learning team. She is also a holder and assessor of CMALT. Previously Sarah worked at the University of Derby on the JISC-funded POCKET project, which explored the opportunities for creating, sharing and reusing open learning resources. POCKET aimed to build upon the Open University’s OpenLearn approach by extending it to other HEIs.

Lou McGill is a consultant in eLearning and information management. Her professional interests include learning literacies, curriculum design, institutional transformation and the sharing, management and use of learning resources. Lou previously worked as a Programme Manager of the JISC eLearning team, and has more recently worked on the Good Intentions study on business cases for sharing learning resources, the Learning Literacies for a Digital Age study (LLIDA), JISC Curriculum Delivery Programme (synthesis) and the JISC/Academy UK Open Educational Resources UKOER Programme (synthesis and evaluation). www.loumcgill.co.uk

Hiten Vaghmaria is the Service Manager for Jorum. He has joined the team following several years managing the development of a variety of services for the BBC, in areas such as learning, music and sport. Before moving into management, he worked in content production for New Media, radio and TV. He maintains a keen interest in user experience and interaction design.
